Tom Dick and Harry Mountain is a wonderful intermediate snowshoe trail just a short trip from Portland. It offers incredible views of Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Jefferson.

Parking at the trailhead is not permitted in the winter months due to the potential traffic hazards, so you must park in the parking lot on the west side of the Mt. Hood Ski Bowl. Follow the tracks west out of the parking lot and along the highway for close to a mile back to the Mirror Lake Trailhead. Note: do not follow tracks that venture into the wooded area. These tracks do not lead to the trailhead.

Once you reach the trailhead, follow the well-tracked trail about 2 miles to a trail junction. This trail is also popular with cross-country and backcountry skiers, and it is generally well packed. Follow the trail to the right to find the shores of Mirror Lake and a view of Tom Dick and Harry Mountain. There will be another trail junction with a sign, but the sign can be hard to see as it is obscured by low hanging branches. The left trail drops down to the lake loop and the right will march into the forest. Stay to the right. This trail will start to gain elevation and offer views of Mount Hood and the Camp Creek valley. The trail will lead to a very large cairn and turn sharply to left. Follow the trail up until you are greeted with an amazing view of Mount Hood to the north.

Comments

There is a designated parking area at the west end of the ski bowl parking area and a new trailhead. You should very much follow the well marked trail that goes through the woods from the restroom/parking area. The new trail has several bridges over the stream that winds through the forest to meet up with the old trail that starts the ascent up to Mirror Lake. It is no longer necessary to make the dangerous trek along the highway. I don't know if the trailhead mentioned above is even there anymore. I did the snowshoe from the new trailhead last winter and will be going again this year!

a windy day and the snow was perfect for micro spikes. the view is epic and well worth the hike.

The "sharp left" mentioned is a little obscured during winter, lamdmark image attached.

Also may recommend wearing goggles etc. As you're walking next to a highway with gravel distributed on it and might get kicked up.

Very good intermediate hike!
