When on an island whose many beaches fall within state park bounds, it is often tempting to search out that secret spot that escapes the crowds (and the day use fees). Similk Beach appears on many maps, and its siren song might draw the adventurous. However, a visit to the beach reinforces just why the more beautiful beaches fall within Deception Pass State Park. Similk Beach is little more than a small shoreline with no facilities. Lack of maintenance support at this beach means that it's often filled with litter (sometimes including dangerous needles), and there are no restroom facilities. At low tide, the beach is a bit slimy for strolling. At high tide, though, swimming is certainly possible, and is likely to be a bit warmer than its ocean cousins. Arguably the best way to enjoy Similk Beach is to appreciate its peace and quiet and to watch birds while perched on a piece of driftwood yourself.
