Within the 220-acre Washington Park (managed by the city of Anacortes), there are two beaches. One is West Beach, and the other is Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach is largely used for picnicking and sun-bathing. There are three covered picnic areas, one of which is  reservable by calling Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department at 360.293.1918. Additionally, several of the 10 first-come, first-served uncovered picnic tables feature fire pit barbecues and are located right on the beach. The park is well maintained with clean restrooms and nary a piece of litter in sight. A playground is available for kids, and there is a family-friendly hiking network along Fidalgo Head that can be accessed from the beach. A boat launch along the beach is perfect for kayaking trips into the San Juan Islands. Note that while parking is free for passenger cars, there is a fee for parking in the boat trailer area. Visit the City of Anacortes website for updated details regarding periodic closures – the park is sometimes used for municipal events.
