Although Whidbey Island is chock full of wild beaches and untamed areas, there's sometimes a need for a more civilized municipal park. That's where Windjammer Park (also known as City Beach) in downtown Oak Harbor comes in. True to Whidbey Island fashion, the park has a beach with a swimming area, and it also has a boat launch, a dock, and a seasonal slide. At low tide, when swimming can become challenging due to the shellfish and mud, the beach is still a great place for bird-watching or sunbathing. For those typically overcast Pacific Northwest days, there are plenty of other activities in the 28.5-acre park ranging from playgrounds to ball-fields to gardens. Kitchen, gazebo, and canopy facilities are reservable by contacting the City of Oak Harbor Utilities Office at 360.279.4530.
