Newspaper Rock is a worthwhile quick stop on the main park road in Petrified Forest National Park because it is a spectacular display of petroglyphs, but it is a bit disappointing that the observation area is so far away.

It is a short walk from the parking area to the viewing deck perched on the rim of a short, steep canyon. About 50 feet down near the bottom of the cliff are several rocks with over 650 petroglyphs, some thought to be over 2,000 years old. There are a few stationary binoculars and a telescope to aid viewing. This must have been an important spot for ceremonies or communication among the nomadic residents of this area.
