Clam Beach is one of three beaches near McKinleyville that are all part of a long stretch of beach that is only separated by the shallow mouth of Mad River. The other two beaches are Mad River County Beach and Little River State Beach. This several long stretch is perfect for early morning beach combers, runners, and groups looking to simply enjoy the beach. The sand here is soft and often backed by small grassy dunes.
Tight dog restrictions exist at Clam Beach due to snowy plover nesting areas. Snowy plovers are a threatened species of bird that creates nests in open sand areas. Because their eggs are small and speckled, they can be easily stepped on or run over by visitors. The best way to avoid contributing to the decline of a beautiful species of bird is to only walk on wet areas of sand covered by the last high tide, especially between March and September when these birds nest most frequently. Pets also pose a hazard as they can step on nests, eat eggs, or chase birds. Please obey all signs for dog restrictions.
