Campground Description

Campground Description

Team

Visitors to the incredible Mineral King Valley in Sequoia National Park have two campgrounds to choose from. Cold Springs Campground is slightly farther up Mineral King Road and is located near the Sawtooth and Eagle-Mosquito trailheads. Atwell Mill is the first campground you'll encounter along Mineral King Road, and it is a better choice if you are considering the moderate hike to Hockett Meadow using the Atwell Trailhead located in the campground. Atwell Campground is also just a half mile from Silver City Resort, which has a restaurant and store.

Atwell Mill was the area's main mill before the mining economy moved on from this region, a development you'll no doubt appreciate as you crane your head upward to regard the gigantic sequoias that tower over the sites in the campground. Sites in this campground are well spaced and well distributed, so you'll have no trouble placing more than one tent in a site. The entire campground receives the shade and protection of the tree canopy. This is a beautiful and straightforward National Park Service campground: all 21 sites are first-come, first-served, tent only, and have picnic tables and fire pits. Vault toilets and bear boxes are centrally located, and potable water is available from mid-May through mid-October.

Atwell Mill Campground closes in the winter, roughly the end of October through the middle of May when Mineral King Road is closed.
