Pineknot is the most convenient Forest Service campground to the town of Big Bear, and it is located right at the base of Snow Summit Ski Resort. From your campsite you can bike into town to check out shops, restaurants, and the lake. Simply walk or ride up the hill into the resort for hiking, mountain biking, or the scenic sky chair.

The proximity comes at a price in popularity. You should reserve a site in advance because none are set aside as first-come, first-served campsites. There are 47 sites situated rather tightly, but each has ample room for two vehicles a few tents. Each site has a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill. Drinking water, trash cans, and toilets are nearby.

Note: Pineknot Campground is typically open from the end of April through the end of October. Call 877.444.6777 for specific seasonal dates.

"high" congestion is right - this is definitely more for people looking for a spot to drink in the woods, big family parties, etc., than those who want a quiet night in nature. There is space enough between sites, but no underbrush, so sound carries in a major way. It is well maintained, but make sure you bring your earplugs!
