There's no shortage of trails in Mammoth Lakes, and there are options for every fitness level. While distances and elevation profiles may vary, all the trails around Mammoth share one common trait: spectacular views.

The Mammoth Rock Trail is no exception. Located just south of the town of Mammoth, this trail gives you a great view of the whole town and the nearby mountain. The terrain is pretty easy to traverse and the route has very little elevation gain. You can start at the trailhead on Old Mammoth Road and finish at Sherwin Creek, or you can choose the opposite direction. If you do start from Old Mammoth Road, you'll have less than a half mile of hiking before you reach Mammoth Rock.

The trail runs just near the base of Mammoth Rock. If you decided to go to the summit, you'll notice paths that approach the base of the formation. Scramble up on the north side to find a Class 3 section that will take you to the summit.

The trail might be covered in snow in the winter, so proceed with caution.
