Briefly after starting down the La Corona Trail in DeLaveaga Park, the trailhead for the Lower Redwood Loop begins. This 1-mile loop starts off fairly level as it parallels Branceforte Road for a half mile. Small groves of redwoods along with pine and oak trees provide plenty of shade on hot days.

At the apex of the loop the trail turns into the Sand Pit Trail, which leads to a nearby off leash area for dogs. The trail is not marked where the loop continues, so if you reach Sand Pit Trail, backtrack about a tenth of a mile. At this point the trail start starts to climb uphill and cuts through the hillside. After another half mile you will return to the starting point to finish the loop.
