A plethora of great hiking trails wiggle around and over the heals near San Rafael, and several are included in the Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow Open Space Preserve in Marin county. This route offers some great views of this open space that is easily accessible from the city.

Starting from the trailhead off of Lucas Valley Road, the trail quickly climbs uphill and gains views of the Terra Linda houses to the south. After just a half-mile from the start you will find an intersection: stay to the right to keep exploring the area as the other road will take you down back to Terra Linda. After another half-mile climb you will find another intersection where you can choose either direction. The trail on your left will loop around deeper toward Terra Linda, while staying on Terra Linda fire road will take you to the northwest toward Loma Alta.

The trail is wide with good view. Expect to see quite a bit of people and dogs as this is a pretty popular trail due to its location.

Terra Linda fire road eventually turns into the 680 Trail as the other road is blocked by a fence. The 680 Trail follows along a gorgeous forest that evokes an almost mystical feeling. After about a mile the forest ends and the trail continues along the ridge that will eventually merge with Loma Alta Trail. It is a beautiful nearby trail that is perfect for a daily run or hiking with your beloved dogs, and you can make your trek as short or as long as you want.
