If settling into a tranquil lakeside existence, hiking, fishing, and exploring the lakes at the far reaches of the northern Sierra sounds like an ideal holiday, Packer Lake Lodge just may be the mountain retreat for you. Set on the peaceful shore of Packer Lake (6,218'), this rustic resort rents multiple cabins ranging from single rooms to three-bedroom cabins with kitchen and bath.

Open Memorial Day through Columbus Day weekend (roughly end of May through mid-October), recreation options abound right out the front door. The resort provides a boat dock with non-motorized boats available for fishing, and a separate swimming dock. The trail leading up Sierra Buttes and its precipitously perched fire lookout tower is nearby as are myriad other hiking options in the Lakes Basin vicinity, such as the Bear Lakes Loop, located down the road near Lakes Basin Campground

If lake trout fishing isn't your fancy, there is plenty of river and stream fly fishing accessible nearby on the North Fork of the Yuba River and its tributaries. Mountain Bikers will rejoice with direct access to the start of the Downiville Downhill, one of California's premier downhill mountain biking trails, located at Packer Saddle just a short hop up the road (shuttle needed).

Packer Lake Lodge is well provisioned with a gourmet dining room, bar, and small store that carries fishing supplies, food, and drink. The quiet resort retains a private character despite opening up the dining room to the public Wednesday through Monday. The lodge sees plenty of return customers, a testament to the experience here. Make sure to make reservations early in order to carve out your stay.
