Its unique architecture, free admission, and stunning views are just a few of the reasons that Griffith Observatory has become a beloved Los Angeles landmark. Situated in Griffith Park and accessible from multiple trails and roads, the observatory entertains people of all ages with space-centric programs and exhibits. When visitors venture outside they are greeted with breathtaking views of downtown Hollywood, Century City, Santa Monica, downtown Los Angeles, and the San Gabriel Mountains.

Samuel Oschin Planetarium, housed within the observatory, features live shows that cost between $3 and $7. The venue accommodates up to 290 people at a time, and it is a great spot to relax in comfortable seats while gazing up at the aluminum dome and listening to a storyteller. This is a world-class planetarium with shows that play for a limited amount of time before being replaced with new ones.

Griffith Observatory is also home to Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon, a venue that presents educational programs. Nimoy, the actor who played Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series, narrates The Once and Future Griffith Observatory, which plays daily in the theater. It details the observatory’s history and the renovations that required the building to close for four years in the early 2000s.

Griffith J. Griffith, the man after whom the park is named, set aside money specifically for the purpose of having an observatory built in Griffith Park. When he died his will designated that the money went toward Griffith Observatory, which opened a few decades later. To this day it does not cost anything to use the observatory’s telescopes. Once per month amateur astronomers gather to teach the public about the sky. These events are free and open to the public.

Anyone with a passing interest in outer space who is visiting Griffith Park would be remiss not to stop by Griffith Observatory.  Free educational resources such as this are truly unique.
