If Jumbo Campground is full, Spruce Grove is a good option while you wait for a site to open up. This little-used site is rustic and due for upgrading, and while it may be a spot to land when you need a site, Jumbo is a better option for longer stays in the area. On the other hand, if less traffic is more important to you, Spruce Grove may be a perfect fit.

The campground is set in a very deep spruce forest and consequently receives little sun and massive populations of mosquitos. While this may sound unappealing for early season outings, the shade is welcome later in the season when mosquitos are generally less of an issue. It's not far from the Mesa Lakes Recreation Area with its wonderful lakes and facilities. Campsites include picnic tables and fire rings, and all are spacious enough to allow for some choice in tent location. The campground has potable water and a vault toilet that are centrally located.

Spruce Grove is best suited for tent camping. The road into the campground has a huge dip that would cause most RVs to bottom out, and the interior loops are rough dirt roads with some sharp turns that might cause large RVs to scrape. Most of the sites have pull-through or long back-in aprons.

Other options in the area include campgrounds in the Island Lake region of Grand Mesa such as those around Ward Lake or Island Lake.
