In the heat of the summer, the swimming area at Chatfield State Park draws tons of visitors looking for a reprieve. It’s open annually from Memorial Day through Labor Day and boasts a big, sandy beach with plenty of space to accommodate large groups.

Nearby there are plenty of picnic tables and grills available seasonally on a first-come, first-served basis. Because of the proximity of large, well-maintained restrooms and a wealth of adventuring within the park, it’s common to see parties and family groups posted up for long periods of time. If you’re planning to take advantage of this ideal venue, it’s recommended that you plan wisely and arrive earlier than you think is necessary.

Beyond being an excellent place to take a dip, Chatfield Reservoir is renowned as one of the best places to fish in the greater Denver metro area. Colorado Parks and Wildlife periodically stocks it with rainbow trout and several other species of fish. Additionally, anglers can hook into walleye, bass, perch, crappie, and catfish. Be sure to purchase a license from the park office before you head out.

Note that swimming is only allowed between sunup and sundown, and rangers are quick to hand out tickets to park-goers that don’t comply. Additionally, daily passes cost $8.00 per car, annual passes run $70.00, and both are available at the entrance to the park.

Feel like you couldn’t cram all of the fun into just one day? Chatfield State Park Campground is one of the largest in the state and is chock-full of amenities.
