Kalama Beach Park

Kalama Beach Park is located a few miles north of the much larger and more crowded Kailua Beach Park and is a great alternative for locals and tourists alike. Kailua Beach offers plenty of room to walk long distances in either direction. Head left for a long walk toward Castles Break and the Marine Corps base or head right to the boat ramp just before Lanikai.  There is an outdoor shower and bathrooms but few other amenities. The beach is the star, and that is really all you need in Hawaii.

There is better shore break here than most other nearby parks, so on days with a little east swell you can have some fun waves to bodysurf, bodyboard, or even surf. Casual surfers come here for fun between real swells. Flagpoles is another "break" that helps the kids from going crazy on the east side just south of this beach park. The closest spot to catch a real wave is Flat Island, but it's rarely big enough for short boards.

Shade is less available down here amid the low lying sea grasses and thin palm trees. A beach umbrella or shade tent is not a bad idea at this part of the shoreline. There are larger trees as you head south toward the main beach park.
