Polihale State Park is located at the westernmost publicly accessible area in all of the Hawaiian Islands. At the far end of Kauai, it can only be reached by driving along a poorly marked dirt and sand road, which makes a four-wheel drive vehicle preferable. Driving on the beach is permitted, but it’s advised to not take the chance because a tow from this area is expensive. As sand dunes can reach heights of nearly 100 feet along this beach, even specialized off-road vehicles are stuck in the sand here from time to time.

While the beachfront at Polihale State Park is several miles long, only Queen's Pond offers safe swimming. Outside of Queen’s Pond the waters are not protected by a reef and can have exceptionally strong currents.

At the Polihale State Park you will find running water, flush toilets, semi-private showers, and a few pavilions. There are no other amenities, meaning there is nothing to purchase at the location, no lifeguards, and no medical facilities. Bring your own food and water and plenty of sunscreen.
