Salt Pond Beach Park is a large beach with two small bays and a breakwater that keeps the shorebreak at a minimum. Located near the town of Hanapepe on the south shore of Kauai, this popular destination is perfect for families with small children thanks to its small sea wall that keeps large waves from coming into shore. There are essentially two small bays to choose from here, each with slightly different characteristics. The bathrooms, showers, pavilion shelters, picnic tables, lifeguards and free parking make it a perfect place for people who don't feel comfortable in remote locations along the unpredictable Pacific shore. The water here is calm and shallow on most days, and palm trees give people an opportunity to find some shade from the sun. Just like most places on this island, you will probably get hit with some passing showers, but this location tends to be much sunnier than the east or north shore of Kauai. Apparently monk seals are occasionally spotted on this beach; they are protected, so keep your distance if you see one.
