This short, 1-mile interpretive loop trail is the best introduction to the rich history of Mount Rainier National Park. In fact, the meadow and its surrounding hot springs, all of which are simply known today as Longmire, are what inspired James Longmire to settle the area in 1883. Longmire Medical Springs Resort was established by James and his family, and in its heyday it was a thriving retreat that included two hotels,* countless cabins, and numerous campsites. At the turn of the twentieth-century, the resort could accommodate up to 500 guests in any given summer.

Unfortunately, the hot springs aren't available for soaking. Numerous wells remain, including the famous "Iron Mike" well on the meadow's north end. The hike also passes by the cabin of Elcaine Longmire, James' eldest son, which was built in 1888 and is the national park's oldest structure.

* The second hotel was built in 1916, had 17 rooms, and was eventually relocated. It is now the National Park Inn.
