Aptly named, West End is located on the far west end of Roatan. The entire island is approximately 48 miles long and less than 8 miles wide at its widest point, so a there-and-back trip to cover all of Roatan is possible in a single day. West End is the go-to destination for scuba divers looking to experience the second-largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. This reef system is still healthy and active, so it is filled with sea fans, sea sponges, sharks, sea turtles, sea horses, and all sizes of creatures in between.

Half Moon Bay is lined almost completely with dive shops, and people come from all around the world to experience the aquatic life just off the shore. Because of this international attraction, the small town is comprised of an eclectic mix of locals, American expatriates, and foreign travelers. Also, while diving is by far the main event in West End, there are many more adventures to explore at and from this location: you'll find boat taxis to West Bay, fishing tours, guided island tours, kayaking, submarine rides, scooter and bike rentals, and plenty of restaurants, bars and local baleada shacks.

Roatan Logistics

The island of Roatan is most commonly accessed by a flight from mainland Honduras or from Houston, Texas. There is only one airport on the island, so any visitor that is not arriving by boat will start from this centrally located point. Because the island is small (less than 50 miles from end to end), taking a taxi from the airport to your residence is likely the most efficient and cost-effective option. Popular destinations such as West Bay and West End will have options for vehicle rentals at a reasonable price.
