Those who are looking to escape the noise and bustle of everyday life might consider staying at Chemin-A-Haut State Park for a weekend. Chemin-A-Haut is found in northern Louisiana along the edge of Bayou Bartholomew. Guests can camp in the campground or at one of the 14 vacation cabins. Each of the cabins has a bedroom, a bathroom, a fully-equipped kitchen, screened porch and a fireplace. The air-conditioned and heated cabins have two double beds and can comfortably sleep four people, with a maximum capacity of six. Eight of the vacation cabins sit on the edge of Big Slough Lake and have two bedrooms instead of one, sleeping up to eight people.

The campground is relatively small, but you really feel like you’re out in the wilderness thanks to the surrounding pine forest. The campground bathhouse is one of the nicer state park bathhouses you’ll come across. Chemin-A-Haut State Park features covered group picnic areas that have a fireplace built into one of the sides of the picnic area. These picnic areas would be a great place to spend crisp fall evenings with your campmates.

Kids will love going to Chemin-A-Haut! The park is equipped with two playgrounds and a pool. Adults can find themselves enjoying water sports on the bayou such as fishing or paddling. The campground offers seasonal kayak rentals, as well as golf cart rentals. Folks who are eager to get their paddleboat on the water should check out the large cypress trees found on Chemin-A-Haut Bayou and adjacent Bayou Bartholomew. Depending on the flow, this is about a 2.5-hour paddle trip. Ask one of the state park officials for directions. Big Slough Lake also offers shore fishing opportunities. Those who like to stay on dry ground might prefer to take a hike on either Boy Scout Trail or the slightly longer Bobcat Trail.
