Adventure Description

Adventure Description

The Wonderland Trail is a 1.4-mile there-and-back path in Acadia National Park that makes a straight shot through the open coastal woods to a pebble beach. Along the way it passes through groves of pitch pines and several wildflowers. The trail is wide and mostly level with a few protruding rocks and puddles.

The Wonderland Trail is located at the southern tip of Mount Desert Island's much less trafficked western side. The trail can feel downright secluded compared to the more popular trails along the Park Loop Road. Unfortunately the parking area is relatively small, and it can fill up quickly.

Follow the path out of the parking area as it heads toward the coast. During high seas you'll likely hear the crash of ocean waves before you even start your hike. About a half-mile into the hike, the first ocean views appear. The pebble beach is a great place to watch the waves.

Continue walking around the short loop as it parallels the coast and opens onto broken granite slabs at the tip of the point. The trail cuts back into the woods and returns the way you came.
