A unique landmark in Nantucket, The Old Mill was built in 1746 and is known as the oldest functioning mill in the country.  This 50-foot smock-type mill was originally built using the remains of shipwrecks. The long spar and wheel rotate the top of the mill and turn the sails into the wind. This mechanism allows the gears to grind corn inside the mill. Weather permitting, you can visit the mill and enter the museum to learn and watch how this mill operates. There were once four mills that overlooked the town of Nantucket, although the Old Mill is the only one remaining.

When you arrive at Old Mill, it can be easily missed due to its location right in the middle of an intersection. There is no designated parking; however, free on-street parking is available on one of the side streets next to the mill. Although the mill itself is full of history and is amazing to visit, due to its location there is not much of a view from here. There are, however, some grassy areas and benches around the mill which are great for a quick bite to eat or picnic.

The Old mill is located very close to nearby beaches, shops and restaurants. Although it is no longer a main focal point overlooking nantucket, the history and beauty of this mill make it a great stop on your trip.
