Bald Mountain is a popular hike just outside of Old Forge with a short climb and a BIG view. The trail begins climbing slowly at first, but it climbs quickly after reaching the first bedrock slope. Most of the trail continues along these bald patches of rock, with clumps of roots providing natural footholds. The trail alternates between steep climbs and rolling terrain until the first opening in the trees reveals a view of the surrounding lakes and hills. Continuing up the trail, hikers will find more bedrock climbs and some unique “fins” to traverse. Just after the forest opens up once again, the fire tower comes into view at the summit.

Great views abound, and they only improve from the cabin of the fire tower. The mostly flat rocks near the base of the fire tower create an inviting place to picnic, but do be aware that the edge of the mountain is abrupt.
