Big Pool Campground is a tiny collection of sites located above a medium (not big) pool in Fall Creek. The area offers very little in the way of campground amenities: vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits are the usual suspects. The area formerly offered potable water, but this is no longer the case. Big Pool Campground is minimally set back from the road, and there is very little vegetation between sites for privacy and noise abatement. In all, given the road presence and the small, open layout of all the sites, the area feels more like a developed rest stop than a campground.
Why consider Big Pool? On busy weekends when Fall Creek can get a little crowded, this may be your best option. On the other hand, it may actually be a good first choice if you are camping with a large group and want to take the chance with a first-come, first-served arrangement. Grabbing two or three sites together would make this campground feel like a personalized space, and suddenly the open layout would become an asset.
Further, the campground does offer some easy access to Fall Creek, not to mention the Fall Creek Trail and other adventures in the area. While there are more stunning swimming holes nearby, the pool just downstream of the campground is lovely and an excellent spot if you are camping above it. There is a bit of a bank to negotiate on your way down to the water, but some improvised steps cut into the bank make the commute a little easier. The best access is near the first campsite, located farthest downstream.
Campers at Big Pool can get potable water and firewood from Broken Bowl Campground just down the road. This is also where the campground host for the area is stationed. Like Dolly Varden Campground and Broken Bowl Campground, Big Pool Campground is open from the end of April to the end of September and its sites are all first-come, first-served.
