Hike Description

Hike Description

Although the lack of snow in Central Oregon this winter has put a damper on snow recreation, it has afforded unseasonable hiking opportunities. This relatively new trail tucked in behind Crooked River Ranch is an ideal way to cope with poor snow accumulation by enjoying some of the middle Deschutes Wild and Scenic River area.

This 2.5-mile trail passes through classic Central Oregon pine and juniper forest before traversing switchbacks for 600 feet of descent into the canyon. The trail then meanders along the river for roughly 1 mile with a few natural rest and relaxation points before meeting the confluence with Wychus Creek. At this juncture there is a very small rock scramble before the climb back out of the canyon.

This trail could easily be linked with an exploration of Steelhead Falls, the Otter Bench Trail, Smith Rock, or the Cove Palisades. Note that the trailhead has neither water nor bathrooms.
