If Wanoga Sno-Park is the most popular sledding spot outside of Bend, then Mount Bachelor’s Cinder Cone is arguably the most under appreciated sledding location. Unlike some of the more kid-friendly locations, however, you’ll have to trek into the woods to find the pitch that is best for you. This effort will certainly be rewarded, as you’ll avoid any crowds and find a variety of pitches in excess of 30 degrees.
Mount Bachelor, or Bachelor Butte as it was originally and more appropriately named, was built from a series of four significant volcanic episodes. The most recent created a cinder cone, or scoria cone, on the butte’s lower northern slope roughly 10,000 years ago.
