Just under a mile along Camp Creek Road from the intersection with Marcola Road sits a small, nondescript pullout that is a great swimming option close to Eugene and Springfield. A rundown building that served as an intake for Eugene Waterworks marks the spot, and the forest is gradually and consistently reclaiming it. The McKenzie River pushes by at a stately pace here, and access trails fork to either side of the building. The short trail leading left is through slightly thicker vegetation, but the pool at the end is deep, clear, and worth a plunge. Clearly the more trafficked route heads to the right, where the bottom of the river quickly drops down out of site. Both spots are perfect for a quick plunge on a hot summer day, and you’re unlikely to find a lot of pressure here as nearby swimming holes tend to attract the crowds. Best of all, this little respite is only 15 minutes from Eugene.
Access to areas like this depends on respectful use, and this area has seen some careless users over the years. Do your part to keep this little spot a beautiful one: be respectful with your noise, and grab extra litter as you pack out your own garbage.
