Kaneana Cave, or Makua Cave, is a mysterious site near the end of the road up O'ahu's western Waianae coastline. The massive entrance was volcanically formed by lava dikes, when magma was headed toward the surface. Years of wave erosion has since exposed the ancient lava, forming the cave we see today.

Legend has it that this is where mankind was born from the womb of the earth goddess. Other stories say that Kamohoali'i, a shapeshifter who could turn into a shark, used to lure and drag humans into the cave, where they were eaten. It is said that the cave is still haunted, filled with the spirits of those who died there. In ancient times, entrance into the cave was forbidden. You may still see cultural offerings left in the cave. Do not disturb this area. The cave is not maintained and can be slippery and difficult without proper shoes. Light does not illuminate the back portion of the cave, so bring a flashlight. Overall, this can be a relatively quick stop and is on the way to Ka'ena Point State Park.
