Historic landmarks along the coastline of the western states reflect the timeless draw of explorers and visitors to land’s end. The Tokeland Hotel, situated on Willapa Bay north or Raymond, Washington, is one such place. The original structure was built as a home for William S. Kindred and his family in 1885, but it was converted into the Kindred Inn four years later. Visitors from as far as Idaho and California arrived via boat from South Bend and traveled the final lengths of their journeys in horse-drawn wagons, courtesy of Mr. Kindred.

Beyond the festivities that greeted travelers, the hotel gained a reputation for fine dining and outdoor recreation. On this note, not much has changed in over 100 years. The hotel serves three meals a day in a cozy dining room with views of a meadow that stretches from the hotel lawn to the edge of the bay. Visitors can stroll around the grounds to enjoy bird songs and sightings, a game of badminton or croquet, or seek a more adventurous outing on the bay.

Clamming on Willapa Bay, crabbing at Toke Point, charter fishing off the shores of Westport, or beachcombing in Grayland are long-time favorite activities for visitors and locals alike and can be enjoyed within just minutes of hotel.

Even if you are just passing through the area on a journey along the southern Washington coast, take a short detour off the highway to enjoy the charm of Washington’s oldest resort hotel and one of the state's registered historic places.
