No matter what time of year it is, Rainbow Falls provides an easy, scenic walk in the woods that's just minutes south of the town of Plymouth. Park at the pull-off at a bend on Cummings Hill Road and walk a short distance to the trailhead kiosk following signs for the Walter-Newton Natural Area. The shortest route to the base of the falls is the Ruth Walter Trail, which is a well-maintained 0.6-mile trail with mostly flat and gentle terrain. This route is best for beginners, families, or anyone who has difficulty with rougher terrain.

The approximately 25-foot high waterfall changes immensely with the seasons, with the best time to visit being during the spring or after heavy rainfall when water levels are highest. The falls may become a trickle in late summer and autumn, and the bright, changing colors of the maple trees become the bigger attraction. In the winter, the build-up of snow and ice at the falls creates a beautiful scene. There are two benches at the falls to relax and take in the scenery, and a side trail will bring you to the top of the falls for a different perspective. Use caution when hiking near the falls, as rocks may be slippery and can result in a fall. Choose between returning the way you came, or follow the Newton Trail back to make a loop. The Newton Trail is slightly longer, at 0.9 miles, and has several ups and downs along the way. Stop at additional benches for views of the nearby wetlands, and look for moose, birds, and other wildlife.
