Alturas Lake is an alpine lake located just over 20 miles south of Stanley, Idaho, in the Sawtooth Mountains. It is a bit smaller than it's northern neighbor, Redfish Lake, but it has plenty of recreational opportunities and fewer crowds.

The day use area is located in Alturas Lake Campground and has a separate parking area just steps from the beach. There is a designated swimming area and plenty of room to launch paddleboards, kayaks, or canoes. On the far side of the swimming area there is section of the beach for dogs to be off leash and swim in the lake. If you'd like to boat in Alturas Lake, head to the boat launch at Smokey Bear Campground, where there is a public launch and plenty of trailer parking. There is no dock at the day use area, but the beach is a popular pick-up and drop-off for tubers and water skiers.

In the shade of the trees you'll find a few picnic tables and fire pits. Bring your fishing rod as the inlet offers prime fishing for the children and fun for the adults. Restrooms and dumpsters are available at the day use area. Remember to pack everything out and clean up all your food waste; no need to welcome unwanted bears to the campground and beach.

If you'd like to spend a night or two at the lake, reserve a spot at Alturas Inlet Campground or try your luck at North Shore, Smokey Bear or the tent-only campground on the opposite side of the lake.
