Shelby Farms Park is one of the highlights of the Memphis metro area. It is where friends and family congregate at all times of the year. From family picnics to zip lining, this park has so much to offer. It contains 4,500 acres and is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. It has more than 40 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Shelby Farms Green Line, which is currently a 10.6-mile paved trail through Shelby County, opened in 2010. It is currently being expanded to encompass the entire county from Collierville to the Mississippi River. The park is home to more than 20 lakes and ponds that are enjoyed by water sports enthusiasts, dogs, and fishing enthusiasts.
A herd of American bison lives in the park. The herd started at the park in 1989 as part of a conservation effort throughout the United States, and to this day the park holds an average of 25 bison. Every spring new calves are born and can be seen playing around the 50 acres they inhabit. You will likely see white-tailed deer, fox, and wild turkey roaming throughout the park.
At the east side of the park you will find a 100-acre off-leash dog park filled with numerous lakes and trails, where your pets will find true happiness. Every October the park hosts one of the largest haunted trails in the area, and in December you will find a massive array of Christmas lights and displays throughout the park. If you are in the Memphis area drop by one of the best-kept secrets in the Bluff City.
