Most of Deception Pass State Park's attention is focused along the western shore, but there are a few areas to explore on the east side of Highway 20 as well. The water's a bit calmer heading through the pass toward Similk and Skagit Bays, which makes Cornet Bay an ideal location for a small marina and docks – the main point of access for boating in the park. Crabbing and fishing from the docks is permitted, and it is a good spot due to the placid waters. Since most of the action is focused on the marina, there's a good bet that the beach will be emptier than other locations in the park. The shore is a bit pebbly, but it is still a good spot to spread out a blanket and swim. Those averse to swimming in seaweed might have a bit more of a challenging time, though. Anywhere along Cornet Bay makes for good birdwatching, from seabirds to great blue herons to the smaller songbirds that spend time in the trees lining the cove.
