Campground Description

Campground Description

Team

At one point in time, Sunrise offered 215 cabins and a large campground, but all that remains for those looking to spend the night is modest Sunrise Camp. Sunrise Camp was once a much larger campground, but it was scaled back to limit the environmental degradation the area endured in the early 1940s.

Nestled roughly 1.3 miles by trail west of the Sunrise Visitor Center in the heart of Yakima Park, Sunrise Camp now offers only seven walk-in campsites that require a backcountry camping permit. While free, these sites can often be difficult to book due to the popularity of the Sunrise area.

Note: Sunrise Camp has a vault toilet but no potable water. Adjacent Shadow Lake is the best source for drinking water, but be sure to bring your filtration/purification system with you. Campfires are also not permitted. Further, because of its 6,400-foot elevation and extensive snowpack, the road leading up to Sunrise can be closed until as late as early July and closes again in October.
