Circumnavigating Johns Island is a fun day trip from Stuart Island or as a detour on the way back to Roche Harbor or Friday Harbor. From the camps at Reid Harbor on Stuart Island, paddle out of the bay through Johns Pass. From there, either head toward Prevost Harbor to explore or continue down the exposed northern side of Johns Island. Paddling off the coast of Johns provides a great view of the mostly privately owned Flattop Island. You'll also have the option to explore the kelp beds and tidal rips near the Cactus Islands off the southern end, where seals and sea lions often congregate.
