Paddling from Sucia Island to Matia Island means you’re making a crossing on the Strait of Georgia on some of the northernmost waters of the San Juan Islands. This route is by all means rewarding, as you’re traveling from one of the top-ranked boating destinations in the world to a 145-acre National Wildlife Refuge. While whale migration routes don't generally pass between Sucia and Matia islands, whale sightings are reported annually. There are also large populations of seals, sea lions, porpoises, and shore birds in the area.

Be sure to consult a tide table before embarking on this adventure, as the tide can fluctuate by as much as 14 feet around Matia Island.
