BCT: Orme Trailhead to Big Bug, is a 13-mile point-to-point segment of the 80-mile Black Canyon Trail (BCT). This segment runs from a remote trailhead off of Orme Road south to the Big Bug Trailhead. This is a non-motorized, singletrack trail that is open to hikers, trail runners, equestrians, and mountain bikers.
This seldom visited segment is the northernmost passage of the BCT. This section provides a beautiful, rugged, and remote experience of the Sonoran Desert. This segment of the trail is less maintained than the rest of the segments heading south, although it is still fairly easy to follow. Hikers should remain aware and dress appropriately as some areas of the trail are overgrown with spiky catclaw.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TRAILHEAD
From Phoenix, AZ - take I-17 to Orme/Dugas road exit (exit #268). Turn left and follow a well graded dirt road for about 7 miles until you reach an unsigned dirt parking area. Look for a small brown trail marker which marks the start of the Black Canyon Trail from here.
PERMITS
There are no permits or fees required to hike or bike this trail.
WEATHER AND SEASON
This desert trail features hot summers and little shade. In the winter the temperatures can drop below freezing at night, but during the day the averages are around 60-70 degrees making it the perfect winter getaway for anyone craving the sun while most of the country remains dark and cold.
HISTORY
The BCT follows a route that was once used for Native American travelers and traders. In 2008 the trail received its National Recreation Trail designation. This designation came as the result of it’s rugged nature, natural beauty, and historical significance.
