Nim Li Punit (translating to "the big hat" in the Mayan Kekchi language after a figure on one of its stelae) is a smaller site, however, it has a disproportionately large amount of stelae present. With 26 stela on site, the visitor center display includes Stela 14, the tallest known example in Belize and second tallest from the ancient Maya civilization at 31.2 feet. The site is believed to have been active from about A.D. 720 to 790.
The site itself is divided into three groupings, with examples of tombs, ball courts, and what is believed to be an astronomical observatory present throughout. The stelae, tall stone monuments featuring carvings used to commemorate political leaders, alliances, and battles, are spread throughout the grounds, with those in the visitor center being especially well-preserved and detailed examples. There are a few signs here, though visitors wanting more than just a cursory glance at the significance of each structure may want to look into visiting with a guide. Admission fees are $10BZ per person. The site is open daily from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Reaching the site requires a short drive up a steep and rough dirt road.
