After the heat of summer has finally burned away, something special settles over New England. The air becomes crisp and cool and the leaves slowly trade in their lively greens for warm oranges, yellows, and reds. Locals and tourists alike delight in the spectacular show with back road drives and outdoor adventures.

This beautiful season is made all the more special by how fleeting it is. While fall officially begins in late September and winter doesn't arrive until late December, the best time to catch the foliage is somewhere in the middle, from early October to mid-November.

Between apple-picking and hay rides, you have to squeeze in a few hikes or paddles to truly enjoy a New England fall. From rushing rapids to mountain trails to soft and gentle lakeside paths, the northeast region has something for everyone. These photos are a just a snapshot of what your New England fall adventure could look like. Be sure to check out the Featured Adventures below for more details.
