Tallahassee is a vibrant hub for culture, history, and outdoor adventure. The city’s skyline is green with trees, and within miles of the downtown area, trails of all sorts are waiting to be explored. Kayakers can glide over crystal clear springs and tranquil waterways, hikers can find their bliss beneath lush canopies, and runners can take their pick of trails with diverse features and terrain. If you want to find the perfect mix of urban nature, outdoor fun and even wilderness in and around Florida’s capital city, look no further than these following six trails.

Waterways

Wacissa River

Sourced from 12 freshwater springs, the Wacissa River looks like something out of a fairy tale. Clear and cerulean blue, it meanders through a lush forest of tall cypress trees and native vegetation. This tranquil environment is home to numerous species of birds and other wildlife like turtles, otters, and even alligators, so make sure to bring your camera! The Wacissa is easily accessible from a public ramp at Wacissa Spring. As you make your way down the waterway, be sure to check out the gem-like smaller springs dotting the river’s edge –– they’re great for swimming and picnicking.

Hiking

Leon Sinks

To experience some of the area’s unique geology, check out Leon Sinks Geological Area.  This hiking area is famous for karst topography –– it’s sprinkled with sinkholes, many of which connect to form one of Florida’s most extensive underwater cave networks. Visitors can easily access and explore Leon Sinks via an immaculately maintained 4.4 mile loop trail. With abundant wildlife and surreal landscapes, it’s no wonder that this is one of Tallahassee’s most popular hiking destinations.

Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park

Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park boasts over 20 miles of trails spread throughout 670 acres of lush green forest. Depending on what type of adventure you’re seeking, the trails are designated for hiking, biking, horseback riding and shared-use. Poplars, magnolias and other hardwoods characterize this wilderness area, so no matter which path you take, you’re sure to enjoy the vivid landscape and old-growth forest.

Running

Lafayette Heritage Trail

The Lafayette Heritage Trail has something for everyone. This mellow, unpaved trail passes through both forest and wetland as it winds around sparkling Piney Z Lake and offers stunning views of Florida’s wild scenery. The trail is ideal for runners, dog friendly, and it’s also open to hiking, biking and horseback riding.  Best of all, this beautiful slice of nature is located only 6 miles east of downtown Tallahassee.
