Love maps? Still need to find the right gift for the holidays?

Local designer and Outdoor Project collaborator Greg Jones recently started 54X40, a business that creates artifacts, elements of education, and pieces of art inspired by nature and geography. The name alludes to the historic rallying cry of "Fifty-four forty or fight!" that was heard during the 1840's conflict over the Oregon Territory's northern boundary with what was then British North America (and today is Canada).

With the recent launch of www.fiftyfourforty.com, Map Magnets are the first product that is commercially available, and for any nature lover, these will make the perfect last-minute holiday gift. The magnets are interlocking, wooden, topographic maps of the contiguous United States. Handmade in Portland, Oregon, the map magnets are created from laser-cut 1/32” sheets of veneer. Each layer is carefully stacked by hand, one layer upon the other, building up the mountain ranges and plains of the contiguous United States.
