OVERVIEW

17 Palms Oasis via Truckhaven Trail is an 8.5-mile out-and-back adventure that takes you from the Truckhaven Trailhead to the lush desert retreat of 17 Palms Oasis. The trailhead is located off S22/Borrego Salton Seaway. Along the route, you’ll encounter stunning desert landscapes, unique geological formations, and the chance to visit a rare palm oasis that has served as a desert refuge for centuries.

DESCRIPTION
Starting at the Truckhaven Trailhead, this route traverses rocky terrain and sandy washes, offering sweeping views of the surrounding badlands and distant mountain ranges. Located near the edge of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Truckhaven Trail is a favorite among off-roaders but also welcomes hikers and trail runners drawn to its rugged beauty.

The trail climbs gently at first before descending into a sandy basin as you approach 17 Palms Oasis. This unique spot is home to a cluster of California fan palms, a striking contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as lizards, jackrabbits, and desert birds near the oasis.

In spring, vibrant wildflowers like desert lilies and sand verbena add splashes of color to the scenery. This hike is best tackled during cooler months, as the open terrain offers little shade.

FLORA AND FAUNA
The trail features desert flora, including creosote bushes, ocotillo, and various cacti. Wildlife sightings may include roadrunners, ravens, and desert bighorn sheep. The oasis supports a variety of birds and insects that are drawn to its rare water source.

CAMPING, PERMITS AND PARKING

  • Permits: No permits are required for hiking. If exploring within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park boundaries, check for any restrictions or permits needed for specific activities.

  • Parking: Parking is available at the Truckhaven Trailhead.

  • Camping: Dispersed camping is allowed in the open desert surrounding the trail. While there are no developed campgrounds along the route, primitive camping offers breathtaking stargazing opportunities. Ensure you bring all necessary supplies, including water, as no amenities are available. Follow Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment.

SAFETY AND CONSIDERATIONS
Prepare for the hike with plenty of water, sun protection, and navigation tools, as signage is limited, and the desert terrain can be disorienting.
