The Bolder Canyon Trail is a 10.7 mile round trip trail located in Los Padres National Forest. The trail runs between Ozena Station located off Highway 33 and Pine Mountain Campground.  It features a mix of shaded forest, rocky creek crossings, and rugged terrain with great views of Lockwood Valley and Mt. Pinos. The trail showcases diverse plant life and opportunities to spot local wildlife, making it a rewarding adventure for hikers seeking solitude and natural beauty. It is fairly easy to follow, though some sections may be overgrown and require a little bushwhacking. Check with rangers for current conditions.

Start at the Ozena Station Trailhead, following the Boulder Canyon Trail as it ascends gradually through mixed chaparral and oak woodlands. The trail crosses several creeks and passes through shaded groves of pine and fir. The terrain varies between packed dirt and rocky sections, with occasional steep stretches.

After approximately 5.35 miles, you’ll arrive at Pine Mountain Campground, a dispersed backcountry site surrounded by towering pines and forest understory. The campground offers a peaceful setting for rest and exploration. Take some time to enjoy the serenity, then retrace your steps along the same route back to Ozena Station.

The trail traverses diverse habitats including oak woodlands, chaparral, and pine forests. You may spot deer, squirrels, and a variety of birds like Steller’s jays and woodpeckers. Wildflowers bloom in the spring and early summer, adding vibrant color to the landscape.

About a mile from Pine Mountain Campground, you’ll find a small spring called McGuire Spring. Check with local rangers regarding reliability and always treat water collected in the backcountry.
