The Brea Dam Loop is a series of single track trails, access roads and multi use paths that cricle the basin of the Army Corps of Engineers Brea Dam project.
Beginning at Brea Dam Park, foot paths climb the hillside to the right of the dam. These are the steepest trails that will be encountered, as the paths lead to access roads circling the top of the dam area. Crossing the paved path gives perspective to the massive reservoir basin - typically completely empty - with views stretching up to the peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains which make up the edge of the watershed.
Over the years, use trails have emerged circling the creek, and a little navigating circumvents the hospital building and parking areas before descending down to the foliage filled basin. The area is popular with dog walkers and bicyclists, but stays mostly peaceful. The trail reaches a pair of tunnels that pass beneath a road, leading to a further network of area trails on the other side, before circling back along the east side of the generally trickling creek.
Approaching the cement structure of the dam, the trail makes a final climb to a high point where views as far as the Disneyland landmarks rising in the distance. A steep descent on a series of trails leads back down to the park and trailhead.
Those looking to add some distance to their hike might look into the further trail network that overlaps with portions of this hike.
Water and bathrooms are located in the park at the trailhead. The park and parking area are open daily from 7am to sunset.
