Desert View Nature Trail is a 1 mile hike up a 275' climb, ending in a viewpoint from atop Whistler Ridge that offers views of desert features and scenery along the way.
This route is the most developed trail in Red Rock Canyon State Park, and along with Hagen Canyon Nature Trail, offers the most scenic bang for your buck for those looking to choose a hiking trail in the park.
Beginning from a signed trailhead, pamphlets are available to allow hikers to look over information at a series of numbered landmarks along the trail. The trail heads in a clockwise direction from the initial fork, following a single track path that weaves through the lower desert floor before starting a climb up the gravel and sandy slope. While gaining in elevation, views across the state park area, along with the geologic formations of the surrounding landscape come clearer and clearer into view.
After climbing a series of wooden steps, hikers can opt to turn back downhill to complete the loop, or continue upward, following signs for Whistler Ridge which lies atop one steep and slick final uphill climb. From the peak of Whistler Ridge, one could assume it got its name from the wild winds whistling in your ears. Panoramic views greet those who reach this high point.
From here, head back downhill, with a more direct route leading back toward the trailhead.
This hike includes views of geologic and fault activity, Joshua trees, wide skies, distant glimpses at the flat valley south of the park area, and seeing the highway and just how small it is in relation to the landscape.
Drinking fountains and vault toilets are located at the trailhead. There is no shade along the trail and extreme temperature warnings may appear during the summer months. The Desert View Nature Trail is subject to Red Rock Canyon State Park fees and open hours.
