This classic High Sierra out-and-back takes you from Florence Lake Trailhead into Evolution Basin, one of the most iconic and beloved stretches of the Sierra Nevada. With granite cliffs, alpine meadows, turquoise lakes, and soaring peaks, this 45.8-mile route is ideal for experienced backpackers looking for a mix of trail solitude and big-mountain scenery. For those interested in scrambling, the basin also offers excellent peak bagging opportunities, including Mount Darwin, Mount Mendel, and Mount Spencer.
Begin at Florence Lake Trailhead and cross the bridge over the San Joaquin River, following the well-worn Florence Lake Trail through forested sections and open meadows.
You’ll pass by the Muir Trail Ranch (MTR), a famous resupply stop for JMT and PCT hikers. Continue west until you intersect with the John Muir Trail (JMT). From here, head southbound on the JMT/PCT.
Continue to Evolution Lake, perched at 10,852 feet and ringed by granite ridges—your turnaround point for this journey.
Set up camp near the lake and take time to explore the area. After soaking in the views, retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.
Flora & Fauna
The route passes through rich conifer forests, wildflower-filled meadows, and stark alpine terrain. Marmots, deer, and pika are common, and black bears are known to frequent Evolution Valley. Birders may spot Clark’s nutcrackers, mountain bluebirds, and peregrine falcons near the basin walls.

Water
Water is abundant throughout the route, but always filter or treat before drinking.
