Hot Creek Snowshoe

During the summer and fall you can drive to the Hot Creek Geologic Area, but during winter months the road becomes snow covered and makes for a perfect wintery walk. Depending on conditions, microsprikes may be a better choice than snowshoes as the road can get pretty hardpacked.

To begin, follow Hot Creek Hatchery Road for as far as it is plowed. Find a place to park here but don’t block access.

You’ll then set off on foot following the snow covered road. Keep in mind that the road isn’t closed in winter, and although unlikely, you may see snow capable vehicles out here.

The Geological area is just over 1.5 miles from the start of the hike. You first come to a viewpoint where you’ll have a fantastic view down to Hot Creek and the hot pools below. You can then follow the path that descends into the canyon to get closer.

If you descend please stay on the path and out of the areas that are clearly closed off for your safety. You can then hike along the creek for a while before taking a steep side trail out of the gorge and back up to the road.

Once back on the road, retrace your steps back to your vehicle.
