OVERVIEW
The Lamarck Lakes Trail is a scenic 4.6-mile out-and-back hike in the Eastern Sierra, starting from the North Lake Trailhead near Bishop, California. This moderately challenging route climbs through alpine forests and meadows, passing Lower Lamarck Lake before reaching the stunning, high-elevation Upper Lamarck Lake. The trail offers breathtaking mountain views, crystal-clear lakes, and a rewarding destination for those looking for a shorter but rewarding hike in the John Muir Wilderness.
DESCRIPTION
The trail begins at the North Lake Trailhead, immediately gaining elevation as it winds through a classic Sierra Nevada landscape of aspen groves, lodgepole pines, and granite outcrops. The climb is steady but manageable, with occasional switchbacks providing stunning views of the surrounding peaks. At about 1.5 miles, you'll reach Lower Lamarck Lake, a scenic spot with shimmering waters reflecting the rugged terrain.
Continuing another 0.8 miles, the trail becomes rockier as you ascend toward Upper Lamarck Lake, a stunning alpine basin framed by dramatic granite ridges. The lake’s vibrant blue waters make it an excellent spot for a break or picnic before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
FLORA & FAUNA
The trail passes through a mix of aspen and pine forests, transitioning to open alpine meadows with seasonal wildflowers in the summer. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, marmots, pikas, and golden eagles soaring overhead.
PERMITS & CAMPING
No permit is required for day hikes, but an overnight wilderness permit is needed for those camping in the backcountry. Dispersed camping is allowed near the lakes, but campfires are prohibited above 10,000 feet.
