The North Loop may be the most popular path inside Peters Canyon Regional Park. And for good reason; at 2 miles, the North Loop packs the biggest punch into a palatable distance.
Following a generally flat path, the wide dirt trail traces the perimeter of Peters Canyon Reservoir. The lake-like reservoir offers a picturesque foreground to the home-lined rolling hills in the distance. Along the trail, there are additional spurs and shortcuts, allowing hikers to veer from the main loop and explore other areas within the regional park.
The trail does have some short steep climbs and drops, particularly along its southwest corner. But in general, most of the route is fine for kids and hikers with normal abilities.
The biggest downside of this trail is that it tends to get crowded, so hikers will need to remain aware of bicyclists and equestrians passing.
Hiking the North Loop requires paying a day use fee at the self-pay station inside the Peters Canyon Regional Park parking area ($3 in 2025). Outhouses, drinking fountains and trash cans are all located in the parking area. Trails may be closed due to mud following wet conditions. The park and parking area are open daily from 7am through sunset.
